The new Mochiatsu franchise is opening in Glassboro Delsea drive in a small strip center also home to Bosphorus Mediterranean and El Mariachi. The company’s focus is on mochi donuts which use a rice flour which gives the donut a light crispy outer shell and soft inside. The signature pon de ring shape is ideal for sharing and sampling different flavors. They are a fusion pastry crossing traditional American doughnuts with Japanese mochi.
What Is A Mochi Donut?
Mochi is a type of dough that can be used to make many different types of desserts. Most often it is encased in sweet ice cream to create mochi ice cream. Mochi can also be shaped into small balls and fried to create mochi balls. Mochi can be filled with a variety of different sweet things like fruit, candy, or even powdered sugar. A mochi donut is a fusion of traditional American doughnuts and Japanese mochi. The resulting pastry is fluffy and moist with a satisfying chew. It is then glazed and topped with a wide variety of flavors and toppings. This unique texture of the donut also helps to absorb the flavor of the toppings, making them even more delicious.
Most mochi donuts are made using either glutinous rice flour or tapioca starch. Both of these flours are gluten-free, but they produce slightly different textures in the final product. Glutinous rice flour produces more of a brioche-like texture, while tapioca starch makes the donuts denser and more similar to Hawaiian butter mochi.
The glaze that goes on top of the mochi donut is usually milk or plant-based milk, powdered sugar, and sakura powder (optional). To create the perfect glaze, it is important to use warm ingredients so that the donut will have time to soak up the moisture. It is also important to stir the glaze well so that there are no lumps or clumps. Finally, it is important to choose a high-quality powdered sugar for the glaze so that it will set properly on the donut.
What Is The Mochi Ring Donut?
The mochi ring donut is a hybrid of cake donuts and chewy mochi. It uses sweet glutinous rice flour – mochiiko – instead of regular bread flour which gives it an incredible light and fluffy texture. The result is a soft dough that holds an array of delicious fillings and glazes, often with cute toppings that make them super photogenic. They are also baked rather than fried which makes them much healthier and is also a big plus for those with gluten allergies.
Mochi Ring Donut at BearyBoba is an ambitious young brand that started in Edison New Jersey but has quickly expanded to a number of locations across the country. Their menu is full of creative new creations that perfectly combine ingredients from the East with those from the West. These include donut flavors like Nutella, taro, matcha, black sesame, and churro among others.
The first Pennsylvania location is slated to open in Conshohocken this July in the space that was previously home to Jimmy John’s and has two more locations planned for Cherry Hill and Upper Darby. In addition to the mochi ring donuts, they will offer a variety of bubble tea drinks for a trendy trifecta. The drink selections will likely be similar to those offered at Beary Boba or Cool Nate’s Ice Cream & Bubble Tea in St. Augustine.
Mochi Donut Recipe
In addition to the usual ingredients in a doughnut (high-protein bread flour, sugar, leavening agent, and water), mochi dough contains rice flour and tapioca starch. It is this combination that gives the dough its signature texture and chewiness. It is also the reason that mochi can be made in various flavors, fillings, and glazes.
The first form of a mochi doughnut came from Hawaii in the early 1990s as a deep-fried treat called poi mochi, which was filled with mashed taro. It was a popular snack before being adopted by Mister Donut in Japan, where they released the Pon de Ring. This newer style takes inspiration from the Brazilian pao de queijo, with a design of eight dough balls connected in a circle that resembles a teething ring.
Mister Donut’s version is typically glazed with a basic white sugar glaze, but the chain has experimented with many other flavors and designs as well. For example, they have tried a chocolate version of the Pon de Ring, as well as a strawberry ring with sprinkles.
The Mochi Ring Donut at BearyBoba is the perfect dessert to pair with coffee or cake, especially one with a light and sweet glaze or filling. It is also a good option to serve as a dessert for guests at a party or gathering. The doughnuts are usually dipped straight into the glaze and then left to rest on a rack for a few minutes, so the donut can soak up some of the liquid topping.
Mochi Donut Flavors
As the mashup of traditional doughnuts and mochi gets more and more popular, you can find it in many different variations. A churro mochi doughnut, for example, is a reimagined take on the stick-shaped snack that you may have seen at carnivals and theme parks. This variation is topped with cinnamon sugar and is a fun way to enjoy the beloved treat. Another fun flavor to try is a Hokkaido milk tea mochi doughnut. While this variant is similar to a malasada (Malaysian-style doughnut made from a light batter and filled with a rich custard or fruit jam) it has the airy, chewy texture of a mochi doughnut. The bakery also uses a soft, pale orange icing and a sprinkling of sugar to complete the look and taste of the delicious treat.
You can also find a matcha green tea mochi doughnut that combines the flavors of Japanese green tea with a sweet, buttery donut. As with the chai mochi, the doughnut is made from rice flour that gives it an appealingly soft and sweet texture. The doughnut is also glazed with sweet white chocolate and a sprinkle of bitter matcha green tea powder for a unique twist on the cherished dessert.
